The webinar was jointly held by Marc Broekaert (Huntsman), Stephan Rindfleisch (Graco) and Werner Bertleff (BASF), experts in the field, who introduced the technology and addressed the following aspects: raw materials, formulated systems, spray equipment,surface pretreatment and application areas; demonstrated by case studies. The webinar; also comprised a Q&A section where; participants had the opportunity to ask questions to the expert panel.
Polyurea 2K-spray coating technology is a fairly recent development in the polyurethane coatings industry. It was introduced to the US market in the late 80s. Initially the two main application areas were Reaction Injection Moulding (RIM) and sprayable coatings. Today elastomeric spray coatings are by far prevailing. Whereas polyurethane coatings are the result of a reaction between an isocyanate component and a resin blend made with only hydroxyl-containing resins employing catalysts and solvents or diluents, pure polyurea coating is the result of a reaction between an isocyanate component and a resin blend component which contains only amine-terminated resins. In contrast to polyurethane it is a 100% system and does not release volatile components.
The polyurea reaction is by orders of magnitude faster than the polyurethane reaction and the resulting polyurea polymer is more stable towards hydrolysis and mechanical impact. This gives rise to some unique features of polyurea which differentiates it significantly from polyurethane elastomers. Thus polyurea can be applied in extreme conditions. Even at temperatures as low as minus 20°C it will still cure. The most important element of handling fast setting polyurea coatings is good mixing and spraying at high pressure. This needs special equipment which nowadays is widely available in the market.
To get the full benefit of polyurea thorough surface treatment and adequate precautions during application need to be taken to guarantee safe handling and good adhesion and durability. Polyurea technology comes mostly as a spray technology, however, brush or roller-applied systems are also available. Polyurea coatings are mainly used in applications where fast cure is needed and the treated surfaces need to be put in service again as soon as possible.The treated surfaces can be walked on immediately and full curing is obtained already within a few hours.
